Garden Gathering with Joan Harrison

We are thrilled to welcome back Joan Harrison, who will speak about hydrangeas and practical ways to grow them on the Cape.

In 2012, Joan joined us for a signing Hydrangeas: Cape Cod & the Islands, a book with over 340 colored photographs of Cape Cod’s quintessential flower.

About the book:

Finally, a book just about mopheads, the most-popular hydrangeas for home gardeners. A 2021 study by the University of Tennessee Extension Service estimates more than 10 million hydrangeas are sold in the US each year. Mopheads are far and away the hydrangeas in greatest demand, accounting for 90% of sales.

New mophead varieties flood the market every year. It's hard to keep track of them all, let alone choose the perfect one(s) for the home garden. Marvelous Mopheads provides a comprehensive list of mophead varieties and invaluable advice about the best mopheads, including the older tried-and-true mopheads and more-recent introductions.

With over 250 photos showing off the beauty of clearly labeled varieties, the book provides comprehensive information about the wonderful world of mophead hydrangeas.

About the author:

Joan Harrison has been studying hydrangeas for over thirty years. Her passion for hydrangeas prompted her to tour gardens featuring hydrangeas in England, Wales, France, Belgium, Ireland, and the Azores.

She attended the First International Hydrangea Conference in Ghent, Belgium and was a featured speaker at the 2015 International Hydrangea Conference held at Heritage Gardens on Cape Cod. As the founding president of the Cape Cod Hydrangea Society, she proposed and implemented the goal of creating a hydrangea display garden on Cape Cod, now a featured attraction at Heritage Museums & Gardens in Sandwich, Massachusetts. She is the author of three hydrangea-related books: Heavenly Hydrangeas, A Practical Guide for the Home Gardener, Hydrangeas, Cape Cod and the Islands, and Marvelous Mopheads: Hydrangeas for Home & Garden. A fourth book, Lovely Lacecaps, is scheduled for release in 2025. A master gardener, she has designed and planted hydrangea-focused gardens in Oregon, North Carolina, and Massachusetts.
