I am a seasonal reader - historical fiction in the winter, middle grade fiction in the spring, lighter fiction in the summer, and cozy mysteries in the fall - and I’m passionate about children’s literature, which is often full of joy and hope. Whether I am hiking, working outdoors, or traveling, I always have a book in my bag!

I’m a gardener, artist and writer. My love of books comes from my very, very patient mother who would read us stacks upon stacks of books. My favorites are nonfiction - nature, bio, memoirs, food lit, travel. I love reading about people and the earth, about places I may never get to see, about the ways we hurt each other, heal each other, and laugh with each other. I am all over the place!

Literary fiction, cereal boxes, and street signs, I read anything I can get my hands on and I get really caught up in whatever I do read. When I was ten, I took Island of the Blue Dolphins out of the library and went on to renew it each week for the entire summer because I loved it so much. Two summers later, Salem’s Lot left me convinced that my cat was a vampire, and I wouldn’t let him come into the house. Nothing beats a good story!

I like books that are multilayered in perspective and stories with a strong sense of place - even ones told by a bird! I am an artist, I like to bake, and I work at BBS to feed my book addiction.

I love historical fiction because I like to learn things as I read while enjoying the embellishments allowed in fiction. I love being a grandmother of five and showing them - and others - the wonders of gardening.

Well, my story starts at my birth… when I was born in a cult… I’ve been told that my writing is darkly comic and unique. I find myself enjoying nonfiction, including biographies and historical works, more than fiction.

Growing up without a TV, I read and read and read. Still do - plus I have discovered audiobooks, so I read while I’m up to my elbows in soil and putting miles onto my car. I devour books with intriguing stories about people - real or imagined. While my reading preferences skew pretty sharply towards contemporary, literary, and historical fiction, I’m also a sucker for memoirs, young adult fiction, and children's picture books.
